Weight loss and imagery!

Weight loss and imagery is probably an unlikely relationship that is given much thought. But when embarking on a weight loss programme we tend to focus heavily on diet plans and exercise regimes, looking ahead to that actual number at the end of the week, ie, the weight loss amount as a number ( 3 LBS, 1.5 KG etc).

The problem with numbers is they don’t really give you much of a picture.

Imagine being told at your weigh-in class, “Congrat’s……you have lost 2KG over the last week “.You may leave feeling pleased with oneself in the short term, but then that statement begins to fade rather quickly.

There is a reason for that fading quick !

Quite simply, it didnt mean that much in the first place….did it? It sounded good, and the person informing you of that may even have had a miniscule of excitement in their voice for you, but this was it.No real firework or impact. In fact it probably ends up more of a damp sqib !

But if you have something more tangible, more relatable or simply just more VISUAL, then that impact hits better…….. and lasts longer !

And that simple concept was the catalyst for the ConvertMe2it calculator!

For anyone embarking on a journey of weight loss its important to have as many tools in ones toolbox, so to speak. And being able to not just hear how much you have lost, but be able to actually SEE that in a simple visual representation of that weight loss, is so much more powerful.Even if some images are fun or even down right ridiculous! But thats kind of the point here, the more striking and ridiculous the greater the impact and therefore the greater the motivation to keep going on that journey.

Don’t believe us ? Well, let me tell you a short story!

It involves an ordinary middle aged man, but one who eats too much and exercises too little, and has being following this lifetsyle for as long as he can remember. On the odd occassion (usually when having a bath) he remembers he has bathroom scales and stands on them to see how his weight is doing. The number is NEVER good and always showing an upward trend, so to speak. Now, this little descriptive piece you may think does serve well to give you an idea, or even a picture of our middle aged obese friend. But does it really? Just how VISUAL was that description and what did it form in your head? Anything striking? Anything likely to stay? Probably not. That’s what numbers tend to do when used to describe weight loss.

By contrast let me now ask you to click the link below and see just how much more impactful and lasting the visualisation  of our middle aged friend is, compared to the text description above.

Our middle aged man friend !

See what we mean? This image is likely to stay in your head (and ours ) for some time to come! And that’s the power of visual information.

I guess it’s just that visual (imagery) information puts a different perspective on things and seems to embed better and more menainfully in our brains. This is backed up by some science too that claims visual memory is superior for long-term retention. Some studies show that people can remember a large number of images with high accuracy for up to a week, and this memory is more robust than verbal memory.

So next time you are told you have lost 3LBS, remember to check out the ConvertMe2it calculator to SEE exactly what that means. Psst…..let me tell you that’s about 7 poops by our calculations!
